St. Paul Small Boat Harbor

Description

St. Paul Island is a small island located in the Bering Sea off the coast of Alaska. The region is known for its rough waters and brutal winters. Due to the extreme weather conditions, the marina required seasonal docks.

The remote location and harsh environment made for a number of unique challenges. All materials had to be prefabricated, as there were no local sources. In addition, the entire marina system, including piling, was designed to allow for easy removal. Each winter the marina has to be completely disassembled and stored upland due to severe freezing temperatures.

Project overview

St. Paul Harbor lies in the Central Bering Sea off the west coast of Alaska, a region known for rough water and brutal winters. Bellingham Marine worked with general contractor Dutra Dredging and the Central Bering Sea Fishermen’s Association on a turn-key design/build small boat harbor for the local fishing fleet.

  • Scope: final design, fabrication and installation of a prestressed/precast concrete launch ramp, launch float, precast abutments, gangways, anchor systems and marina floats.
  • Everything was prefabricated and shipped by barge, as there were no local materials.
  • The whole system, including piling, is designed to be removed and stored upland each winter.
  • Heavy-duty floats of galvanized I-beams and tube-steel truss frames with glu-lam walers, polyethylene-encased flotation, an 8-inch steel bull rail and steel grating decks.
