Located on the LeFevre Peninsula in South Australia, the Largs North Marina is the first stage of the Marina Adelaide Development which will include a complete marine industry complex, combining sailing club facilities, a private marina and an industrial subdivision capable of supporting a range of marine-related industry uses. The goal of the Marina Adelaide Development is to create a world-class multi-purpose marina and a viable hub that will act as a catalyst for growth in the industry.
The first phase of marina construction was performed by Bellingham Marine. It involved the relocation of the Port Adelaide Sailing Club and the construction of 99 Unifloat berths for club members featuring single piece fingers and the new Sterling service units from Marina Technologies. Bellingham Marine’s scope of work also included construction of access points and a launching platform for participants in the Sailability program for sailors with disabilities.
A manmade basin was designed to accommodate the sailing club as well as a private marina with service and dry storage facilities. Bellingham Marine will begin construction of the private marina, Marina Adelaide, in coming months. The private marina will provide 99 Unifloat berths for vessels from 15m to 24m.
Revisions to layout designs and issues related to disposal of huge volumes of material delayed filling of the marina basin for almost six months. “Land Management Corporation, the state government agency facilitating the development, used this delay to their advantage and worked with Bellingham Marine and the Port Adelaide Sailing Club to further develop the sailability pontoon area to arguably the best in Australia if not the world,” said Kevin Cook, Project Manager for Land Management Corporation.
The Port Adelaide Sailing Club was relocated to the redevelopment area of Port Adelaide from its old site where it had been for over 100 years. The Port Adelaide Sailing Club is known as a “working man’s club” with an emphasis on providing facilities and a supportive club environment to all comers. The change in location is sponsored by the State Government and offers significantly improved facilities from the old site in the Port River.
