Located in a prime location within Auckland’s Okahu Bay and in close proximity to popular boating areas of the Waitamata Harbour, Orakei Marina is one of New Zealand’s latest and most exclusive marinas. The new marina adds 172 full-finger berths to the region providing moorage for vessels 12 metres to 40 metres. Bellingham Marine New Zealand, Ltd. designed and installed the floating structures including the wave attenuator. The marina includes a number of innovative features such as single piece fingers, single piece t-heads, and prestressed hollowspun concrete piles and utilizes Bellingham’s concrete pontoon system – the Unifloat®.
The biggest challenge for the Orakei development team was gaining the rights to develop the site. The site, known as Okahu Bay Landing, was first identified as an ideal location for a marina over 40 years ago. The Orakei Development team negotiated the support of the local iwi and successfully worked together for the timely completion of the marina.

The marina basin is protected from the north and west by rock breakwaters and the south by a 3 metre wide floating attenuator. The fuel jetty is also protected by a 3 metre wide “skirted” attenuator. In addition, berths are sited to account for southwest prevailing winds and northeast storm conditions ensuring boats within Orakei are well protected.

The marina caters to recreational boaters, yachtsmen and sports fishermen alike. The marina features extra wide berths to accommodate multi-hulls and 3-phase power to meet the needs of today’s yachts. Berths have full utility services including power and water. The marina also includes fuel and sewage pumpout services with individual pumpout hydrants at each berth on piers D and E. Restrooms, showers and laundry facilities are also available on site. Although Orakei is a private marina, it provides public access during daylight hours and includes a fishing platform on the outer rock breakwater.

Located on site is the Akarana Yacht club. Future shoreside development is planned including the addition of several cafes and restaurants. The marina is also located just minutes from Auckland’s commercial business district providing easy access to dining, shopping, and residential communities.

As the world’s leading marina design/build construction company, Bellingham Marine produces Unifloat saltwater systems, Unideck freshwater systems and Unistack dry storage systems for marinas worldwide.
