Description

The Long Beach Marinas, which include Alamitos Bay and the Downtown Marinas, are the largest singly run marina system west of Chicago. The urban marinas include a mix of amenities and docks designed to appeal to a range of users.

Protected by a series of offshore breakwaters and a natural bay, boaters enjoy easy access to open water, prevailing winds and close proximity to Catalina Island. Located in the cities of Long Beach and near Belmont Shore, the marina is easily reached via the Pacific Coast Highway, offering visitors convenient access to the surrounding waterfront community.

Project overview

Alamitos Bay Marina in Long Beach, California, is run by the City’s Marine Bureau. Its timber docks dated from the 1960s, so in 2005 the City began rebuilding all 1,962 slips across seven basins. The work was done in phases, design/build with Bellingham Marine, with the final phase finishing in 2018.

The slip mix was modernised: the most common slip went from 30 ft to 40 ft, and slips over 80 ft went from one to ten.
Small-boat capacity was kept by adding dry storage racks in place of the smallest slips.
New electrical utilities with 30–50 A power pedestals and pump-out receptacles.
