The 14th Hole is well-known as one of the most unique and recognizable golf holes in the world. The engineering of the first and only floating, mobile green, allows the 22,000-ton island to move along an intricate underwater cable system to varied distances from the tee.

Project overview

The Floating Green is the 14th hole of The Coeur d’Alene Resort Golf Course on Lake Coeur d’Alene in northern Idaho. The resort describes it as the world’s first and only floating, movable island green, and it has become a bucket-list hole for golfers visiting the Inland Northwest.

The green sits on a 15,000 sq. ft. floating platform. An underwater cable system moves the island so the hole can play anywhere from about 90 to 220 yards, with the standard tee shot between 140 and 170 yards. Golfers ride an electric shuttle boat out to the green to putt out, with lake views in every direction.

The first ball landed on the green in 1991. Since then the resort has refreshed the hole with new wood panels around the island, a new irrigation system and re-sodded turf, while the platform underneath continues to float and move as designed.
